Inspiration and Details
What started as a personal DIY project for Matthew Encina, became an official wood accent for the Mode Sonnet Keyboard. Matthew had a desire to see more natural materials in the custom mechanical keyboard space, primarily dominated by metals and plastics. So he worked with woodworker Bao Loi, of Design Craft Workshop, to create a custom-milled wood accent for his keyboard. The accent was featured in a video by Matthew, and the community responded so well to it. Thus sparking the collaboration to happen.
White Oak
We designed the accent with white oak because of its warm color and distinct grain pattern, which adds a touch of elegance to your desk. Its durability and resistance to warping make it a solid choice for this application.
Hand-Finished
Each accent is sanded by hand for a smooth and refined finish. It’s coated with natural oil to enhance its beauty and protect it from daily wear and tear. Each piece is unique and no two will look exactly the same.
The Results
We’ve done two successful runs of this collaboration, selling out almost immediately on release. This has sparked a new wave of material explorations within Mode Designs and has inspired us to continue exploring the product design space.
